Ikaria, Greece Longevity

Ikaria, Greece has high percentage of people living long lives.

Ikaria has been extremely isolated until the second half of the 20th century.

People lived in small isolated villages. People inland were raising goats, sheep, pigs. People by the coast were fishermen.

Inland people ate goat and sheep meat daily. On the coast people are fish daily.

Lots of raw dairy (mainly goats and sheep) was consumed with every meal.

Meat was mainly cooked in pig lard. Meat and fish was also preserved with salt and spices.

Besides meat, people in Ikaria also ate:

  • Lots of Raw Milk, particularly Goat Milk
  • Cheese - mainly from goat and sheep milk
  • Yogurt - mainly from goat milk
  • Lots of eggs
  • Sausages, ham, salami made from mostly pig meat and fat
  • Oysters and Clams
  • Olives and Olive Oil
  • Local seasonal vegetables - tomatoes, eggplants
  • Local seasonal fruit - figs, watermelons, apricots, lemons
  • Bread made with barley
  • Lots of wine - mostly red
